The Xbox controller comes in both wired and wireless versions. The wireless controllers run on either AA batteries or a rechargeable battery pack. The Guitar Hero controllers for Xbox are wireless, naturally. They will connect to the console in the same fashion that a wireless Xbox controller will. That said, from what I have seen, PlayStation 3 Guitar Hero controllers operate in the same way; they also do not need a dongle. None of the Rock Band games have been released for PC, however, and intercompatibility is generally bad.
This little piece of hardware is easy to find both on eBay and in your local hardware store. So you and your friend want to play Guitar Hero 2 multiplayer, but you only have one guitar, or you have the game but no guitar. No problem! You can just use a regular controller.
